Storage Fundamentals (BAS17)

The current possibilities for setting up your own ICT infrastructure are rather limited. However, there are basic principles underlying everything, i.e. hard disk technology, SCSI, RAID, Fiber Channel and backup strategies.

After this course, you will have a better understanding of the relationship between the different products and the storage fundamentals concepts. The knowledge and terminology you acquire will help you to increase your understanding of (and choice for certain) storage solutions.

Nowadays, ICT infrastructures are mostly set up as so-called Storage Area Networks (SAN). A SAN offers scalability, reliability, speed and easy management.

This course takes an in-depth look at the basic principles of hardware, such as servers, interconnection equipment and data storage systems. For the latter, concepts such as RAID and SCSI are key when storing the digital information. Another important component of SAN infrastructure is the choice of medium on which the digital information is transported. During the course, the two main methods, i.e. Fiber Channel and iSCSI, will be discussed in detail, and the pros and cons of both methods will be examined. Brand-independent storage equipment will serve as a practical example of how to implement storage fundamentals. Attention will also be paid to the possibilities for backup strategies. Experience shows that the amount of collected digital information is increasing, together with the need to store the data for a longer time. This requires a revised approach to the backup strategy.

Virtualization, a relatively new phenomenon in which physical servers are increasingly replaced by so-called virtual machines, is also covered in the course. The concepts of server virtualization are explained using the example of VMware, one of the largest "players" on the market.
